MARK BRISENO

Hand Percusssions & Timbales

Mark was born and raised in San Jose, CA and now lives in the Contra Costa County. He comes from a family of Musicians and was involved with active Musicians in the late 70's in the Bay Area. After being inactive for several years, he has started playing again and has been involved with a Blues and Classic Rock Band. Mark is now looking forward to performing with BAUTISTA and bringing some of his creative flavor to the mix.

PAUL SONNABEND

Conguero

Born and raised in San Francisco, Paul has been drumming since he was 12 years old. A second generation percussionist, his mother a flamenco dancer and father a drummer, rhthym is in his blood. Paul has studied with master drummers from Africa, Cuba and puerto Rico including Olatunji, Mbemba Pangou, Titos Sompa, Raul Rekow, Michael Spiro and Massamba Diop. He has performed, toured and recorded with Beat Freaks, Repercussions, Grupo utrera, Franco Brothers, African Rain, Osumare, Marimba Pacific, Saliva Blue, Earl Thomas, Wazobia, Samba Ngo, Albino, Aphrodesia and many others. He's honored to be playing in BAUTISTA with his long time friend Norman.



ALI LUNA

Conguero

Ali "Choco" Luna has been performing since he was ten years old. At fifteen Ali was playing with local Latin bands like Rice & beans Latin Jazz group and was also a member of Orquesta Pabon a salsa band. Ali is also one of the founding member of Grupo Guanina a folkloric Bomba collective. Ali has studied under Israel Pabon, Jorge Arce, Tito Ayala, Ito Carrillo, Hector Lugo and many more amazing artist that has blessed and influenced Ali. His Styles range from Latin jazz, hip-hop, salsa, Funk and folkloric afro-Boricua Bomba and Plena. Currently Ali plays with such groups as Saboriqua a 12 piece salsa band, mambo tropical, mambo combo latin Jazz group, Son Borikua a traditional Bomba and Plena ensemble. Ali is also a member of the group Agua Libre which explores a few different genres of music such as salsa, reggae, Cumbia, Hip Hop,Latin rock,R@B and Soul. Also involved in the afro Puerto Rican Bomba group Aguacero where he is one of the main Dancers and Drummer. Ali has had the honors to share the stage with artist such as Edwin Pabon, Chichito Cepeda, Ito Carrillo, John Santos, Giovani Hidalgo. Ali Has dedicated his life to constant learning, studying and teaching what was giving to him. "La Musica Que Viva" now sharing in the Conguero Beats of the BAUTISTA Percussion Section!



JUAN ESCOVEDO

Conguero - Timbalero - Percussionist Extrodinaire

At a young age, Juan began teaching himself how to play bongos, congas, trap drums, timbales, percussion, and other instruments. When he turned 14, he began performing with his father, Pete Escovedo.

Juan has toured and recorded with many artists such as, Prince, Tony, Toni,Tone, Patti LaBelle, Lou Bega, MC Hammer, En Vogue, El DeBarge, Freddie Hubbard, Barry White, Herbie Hancock, Teri Lynn Carrington, Bobby McFerrin, Tito Puente, Cheryl Lynn, his sister Sheila E., his father Pete Escovedo, and many others.

Juan has made special appearances in JACK starring Robin Williams, CHASING PAPI starring Roselyn Sanchez and Jaci Velasquez, FORD FAIRLANE starring Andrew Dice Clay, and KRUSH GROOVE starring Run DMC, LL Cool J, and Sheila E. Juan has also made a cameo appearance in Bobby Womack's video "Save The Children."

Juan continues to tour, write and record -- both as a solo artist and with his family: his father, Pete Escovedo, his brother, Peter Michael Escovedo, and his sister, Sheila E.

CARRIE JAHDE

Set Drummer

Carrie Jahde is a unique drummer and composer who has performed professionally across the East Coast, West Coast, and Europe. Her recording credits include sixteen albums spanning jazz, funk, Latin, R&B, electronic, and world music styles; and in-house drumming at the Center for Digital Imaging Arts in Boston. She is an honors graduate of Berklee College of Music (Boston, MA), where she studied with Terri Lyne Carrington (Herbie Hancock), Kenwood Dennard (Jaco Pastorius, Miles Davis) and Jamey Haddad (Paul Simon). She has won multiple awards including the Eubie Blake Music Award and the John Kittredge Educational Grant for Artists. Currently, Carrie plays for several Bay Area creative music bands including PLANET LOOP, MUCHO AXE, and BAUTISTA.





ERIC ENGSTROM

Set Drums


Picked up drumming at the age of 9, attended Berklee College of Music 3 semesters, studied with Alan Dawson-renowned jazz drummer, played professionally in Boston/NY area with various original rock (Orchestra Luna) and show bands, toured the US for 1 year with show/dance band, based in Minneapolis for 5 years freelancing Broadway shows, jazz, Latin rock etc. Did 2 tours of Europe. Played in several jazz groups in Tampa, Fl.

BASS PLAYERS



JEFF YOUNG

Bass

Jeff started playing bass at the age of 13. Starting with lessons from a cool guitar teacher named George Cole. From there, he played in various garage bands and then hooked up with Bay Area guitarist Danny Jones and drummer Dave Tweedie. This group won a couple “Best of the Bay” honors from a local radio station in the San Francisco Bay Area. Looking to further his education, Jeff studied with local jazz bassist Dewayne Pate. From there Jeff attended Bass Institute & Technology (BIT). While in L.A. Jeff gig with different bands doing various types music. Upon returning to the Bay Area Jeff has studied with bassist Kai Eckhardt and has been gigging non-stop long with laying down those Backbone Latin and Funk Bass lines for BAUTISTA!

JIM ALLEN

Bass

Bassist Jim Allen is a veteran studio musician and live performer. Raised in Los Angeles, Jim studied music at UCLA and worked with many outstanding musicians including "Richie Havens, Jai Winding, Danny Elfman and members of Oingo Boingo". Playing in clubs and festivals throughout California he has shared the stage with Charlie Musselwhite, Lydia Pense and Cold Blood, Rick Derringer, Jefferson Starship, Shuggie Ots, and Bruce Willis. After relocating to the Bay area, Jim has continued to play and record with many local musicians including Sonny & The Blenders, Levi Lloyd, Jackie Payne, Jami Jamison and BAUTISTA.

DAVID DYKSTRA
Rythym/Lead Keyboards - Vocals


Perhaps it was growing up hearing classical music and jazz always playing on his Dad's stereo....or listening to all the highly creative Rock and Fusion of the 70's. Whatever the origin, David is a natural talent who's focus has often been on improvisational music in a Jazz/Rock format. Hear this in his own compositions as recorded on his Solo CD "A Gazelle Hunter's Weekend" (www.daviddykstra.com). David's high energy and musical instincts are heard in his shimmering leads and tastily placed chording that has rounded out the BAUTISTA sound.

NORMAN BAUTISTA

Rythym/Lead Guitar & Lead Vocals

Bautista has been writing and singing original music since 1970, Fusing Latin feels and Funk Grooves into Rock creating percussive, rythym driven, soulful songs with melodic lyrics and screaming Guitar Solos. He created several bands, including Paradise Drive and Full Moon, but the internet broadened his circle of musicians to recruit and he was able to bring together talented players from all around the Bay Area that BAUTISTA is today. His influences are from Jimi Hendrix, early Santana, early Tower of Power, the incredible players of the 70's Jazz Fusion like Al DiMeola, Joaquin Leviano, Jean Juc Ponty that can be heard in parts of the songs he writes. Songs have Solid beginnings and endings that are bold statements with tight breaks, ultra smooth danceable Grooves and melodic Lyrics. The creativity of Norman Bautista Rythyms and Arrangements intrique bold and powerful players and attract audiences of all ages and cultures and best of all Dancers love to Groove to these songs!
